HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GET AN OIL CHANGE?

Most vehicles have an Engine Oil Life Monitoring System (OLS) that alerts you when it’s time for an oil change. Consult your Owner’s Manual for more information on the OLS specific to your vehicle.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GET AN OIL CHANGE?

If your engine is the heart of your vehicle, oil is its lifeblood. Driving around with dirty oil — or not enough oil — can shorten the life of your engine considerably. Over time, repeated heating and cooling as well as the accumulation of particles can make oil thicker. Not only can this decrease its ability to flow (also known as viscosity), it can leave harmful deposits in your engine and cause extensive damage. That’s why GM Genuine Parts and ACDelco parts offer both Original Equipment and Gold-tier (Professional) oil options to support and protect your engine.

Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC Certified Service technicians undergo extensive hours of training in order to better understand how your vehicle uses oil and how to service it. An oil change from an expert Certified Service technician not only gives you great service, convenience, and a great price, you also receive the added value of knowing that nobody else knows your vehicle better.

Oil Change Warning Signs

CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON

When the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message displays, service is required for your vehicle as soon as possible within the next 600 miles. If driving under the best conditions, the OLS might not indicate the need for vehicle service for more than one year. The engine oil and filter must be changed at least once a year and the OLS must be reset.

If your vehicle isn’t equipped with an OLS, consult your Service and Maintenance Schedule contained within your vehicle’s Owner’s Manual for proper change intervals.

OIL PRESSURE LOW/STOP ENGINE

Low engine oil pressure can cause extreme and costly damage to your engine. If this message displays, safely bring your vehicle to a stop and do not restart your engine until the proper pressure is restored and the cause of the drop is corrected. You should check the oil level immediately. DO NOT operate the engine with the oil pressure warning light on or an ENGINE OIL LOW ADD OIL message displayed.

OIL LEAKS

One of the most immediate signs of an issue with your oil is noticeable leaks. If you detect a leak, address it with your dealer as soon as possible. Catching a problem before it’s truly an issue can help save time and money.

Checking Your Oil Levels

It’s a good idea to periodically check your oil level. In order to get an accurate reading, the oil must be warm, at normal operating temperature, and the vehicle must be on level ground. Always consult your Owner’s Manual for the proper procedure to check your oil level. You’ll get a more accurate dipstick reading by following those instructions.

OIL CHANGE FAQ

OIL CHANGE FAQ

Q: WHAT DO I NEED TO DO WHEN MY “CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON” MESSAGE DISPLAYS?

A:When the “Change Engine Oil Soon” message displays, oil change service is necessary for the vehicle as soon as possible, within the next 600 miles.

If driving under the best conditions, the Engine Oil Life System might not indicate the need for vehicle service for more than a year. The motor oil and filter must be changed at least once a year and the Engine Oil Life System must be reset. Your dealer has trained service technicians who will perform this work and reset the system.

Q: HOW CAN I BE SURE TO GET THE CORRECT TYPE OF MOTOR OIL FOR MY VEHICLE?

A: Choosing the proper grade of oil is a critical step in engine maintenance. From conventional to full synthetic, your Certified Service experts offer a range of oil types, including ACDelco Conventional Oil, ACDelco dexos1™ Full Synthetic, and Mobil 1™ Full Synthetic. Ask the experts which grade of oil you should use for your specific model. You can also check your Owner’s Manual for the correct grade.

Q: I’VE HEARD THAT I SHOULD CHANGE MY OIL EVERY 3,000 MILES. IS THAT STILL TRUE?

A: The majority of today’s Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC vehicles are equipped with the Engine Oil Life System which has made the 3,000-mile oil change obsolete. Depending on the age of the vehicle, driving habits, and road conditions, vehicles with today’s advanced engines can go much longer than 3,000 miles between oil changes. Always be sure to check your motor oil level regularly, even with an Engine Oil Life System.
